Soy wax vs paraffin wax

Soy wax is natural, burns longer and cleaner, and is great for container candles. Paraffin wax holds colour and fragrance strongly and works for pillar and moulded candles. Beginners often start with soy wax in jars because it is forgiving and easy to clean.

Which wick should I use?

Use eco wicks for soy wax: they are designed for its lower melting point. Cotton wicks work well with paraffin and blends. A wider container may need two wicks for an even burn.

Your first soy candle: step by step

1. Melt the soy wax in a double boiler to about 70 to 80 °C.
2. Fix the wick to the bottom of the jar with a drop of melted wax and hold it upright with a peg.
3. Take the wax off the heat; when it cools to around 65 °C, stir in the fragrance oil for 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Pour slowly into the jar and let it cool at room temperature for 24 hours. Avoid putting it under the AC vent.
5. Trim the wick to 5 mm. For the best scent, let the candle cure for a few days before lighting.

Prefer no-melt candles?

Try pearled candle sand: pour, add a wick and light. It is perfect for kids, events and refillable decor.

Why does my candle tunnel?
